WHO DAT GIRL: Abi Phillips

22nd June 2016.
by Sarah.

At Public Desire we’re all about dishing out seriously high praise to talented bae’s, and one girl who has got us hella excited at the moment is singer/songwriter Abi Phillips. Chameleon Abi got her big break as an actress back in 2010 playing musical character ‘Liberty’ in everyone’s fave soap for beautiful people and a load of drama, Hollyoaks. Since then she’s been workin’ it harder than ever and we thought we’d catch up with our bae and get to know the real Abi Phillips!

So Abi, what does a typical day in your life look like?

It all depends on what I’m doing in the day. If I’m writing, which is usually with Sam Gray in Manchester or London, I’ll go to the gym first thing and then head to meet Sam. We usually write all day until the early hours of the morning! It’s always so good writing together, we get carried away! If I’m rehearsing I’ll get up in the morning and rehearse all day for up-coming gigs and then hit the gym. Think you’ve got the gist that my life is pretty much music and the gym! Normally Thursday to Sunday I’ll be gigging as well which is a lot of fun.

Who was your childhood inspiration and what got you into singing/songwriting?

My first love was the spice girls, I was obsessed! I used to dance around to their music with a hair brush when I was about 3/4 years old so they definitely got me into the performance side of things. I’ve always loved music, I come from a musical family, my granddad was a Jazz pianist, both my mom and auntie sing professionally and my dad plays the guitar and is in a band! So it’s always been a natural thing for me to want to do my music as I’ve always been surrounded by it.

If you could collaborate with any other artist/band, current or throwback, who would you want to work with and why?

At the moment I absolutely love Tove Lo! I think she is immense! And think Disclosure are amazing so I’d love to do a collaboration with them. I’d also love to work with people like John Mayer as well, I don’t have a specific genre that I prefer at all. There are so many amazing artists around at the moment so it’s hard to say!

On-stage or off-stage, what’s been your proudest moment to date?

On stage has to be doing Children In Need with my cast mates from Hollyoaks. I just remember being absolutely TERRIFIED, we had to sing and dance at the same time (whilst wearing these massive heels) and I just remember thinking “DO NOT FALL OVER! For Gods sake do not fall over on national television!” I didn’t fall over and it was such a great experience, plus it was for charity so all in all loved it. I also really loved performing at T4 on the beach. I did two original songs there and I was also filming an episode of Hollyoaks at the time so that was great fun! I also performed at The Pride Of Birmingham recently which was a great experience.

Name one item of clothing in your wardrobe that you couldn’t live without:

An item of clothing that I couldn’t live without has to be my gym kit! Only joking! It would be my black ripped jeans. You can dress them up or dress them down, they just about go with anything!

Trend you’ll be working loud and proud this summer:

I know this sounds pathetic as a girl, but I don’t really follow trends I just wear wear what I feel comfortable in and what suits me. I love playsuits for summer and I love a good pair of high waisted shorts and nice dresses for a gig or night out!

Top 3 Public Desire picks:

I absolutely LOVE the style Melina in nude, black and green, the Olivia boot (especially for winter and autumn) and the Addie! 🙂

Who was your teenage crush?

Too many teenage crushes!  My friend and I literally used to be OBSESSED with Jeremy Sumpter when he played peter pan (we still laugh about it now). I did love Chad Michael Murray from One Tree Hill and also Jesse Metcalfe from John Tucker Must Die!

Fave quote of the moment:

I’m not one for deep meaningful quotes, I don’t like to take life too seriously (unless it’s about animals, then I get passionate) but my favourite quote is: ” ‘When women wear makeup they’re basically lying to us’… I don’t see why I’m being blamed for a man stupid enough to believe I have gold eyelids”

Tell us a secret!

One of my secrets (which will no longer be a secret)…I have flat feet and once my foot got parked on by a car so now whenever my foot gets cold I get weird purple tyre marks all over it … So basically I have weird ugly feet! Your shoes help them look pretty though!

What’s next for Abi Phillips? Do you have any projects on the horizon you can tell us about?

What’s next?! Well I’ve been getting a massive collection of original material together and I’ve currently got some interest, but I can’t say too much at the minute. I definitely will do when I know more!

Message for all the PDbae’s reading this who want to follow in your footsteps.

My message for people who want to work in music or anything creative is go for it, don’t hold back! Go for every audition, keep on practising, keep on trying when people say no, believe me, people will say no and turn you down a lot. This industry is hard and I’m still trying as well! There’s a lot of let downs and people promising stuff they can’t deliver but keep you head down and your chin up and do what you love doing and you’ll get there!
