WHO DAT GIRL: Barely Legal

6th February 2020.
by Hollie Dingsdale.

Today we are catching up with Chloe Robinson, AKA DJ Barely Legal.

Chloe is the genre-blending icon who’s certainly gained international popularity in the underground world with her trademark mixes. Having grown up by her mother’s influences of UK Garage and at just 19 owning her first set of decks, it wasn’t long until she was a regular on platforms like Rinse FM and BBC 1xtra.

Chloe is a firm fave in the club circuit and the launch of her own label, Pretty Weird Records, Barely Legal is a key figure in the scene. Set to always deliver her cross-genre skills at it’s finest.

So now we know the back story, lets hear from Barely Legal herself!

For our PD Bae’s who might not know you yet, could you give us a quick intro to yourself and what you’re about?

Hey, I’m Chloe – I DJ under the name Barely Legal and run the label Pretty Weird. My sound is pretty diverse, I play everything from Techno to DnB and I’m all about being authentic and not taking life too seriously.

If you had to choose, do you have a career highlight so far?

I did the iconic BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix a few weeks back, listen to it here!

For anyone reading this hoping to pursue a similar career to you, would you have any advice for them?

Yep – Work hard, practice, be yourself, get yourself out there and meet people in the industry! Networking is key 🙂

We know you are going to be playing at the iconic Lost and Found Festival this year, exciting! Do you have a go to look for on stage, or just an outfit that’s your fave for performing?

I don’t really think too tough about my outfit, but I occasionally do! For festivals abroad I’m all about the two pieces, I dress quite tomboyish, baggy tee’s, short shorts, trainers nearly always or Docs when it makes sense with the look.

If you had to explain your style in three words, what would they be?

Cosy, Branded, Tomboy.

Fave fun fact about yourself?

I can’t lie. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing? I’m also really good at staying awake for long periods of time.

What’s next for Barely Legal, any big plans?

I’ve curated a Pretty Weird stage at a London festival which I’m looking forward to announcing soon – It’s one of the best curated Pretty Weird line ups yet imo. I’ve also got a nice amount of releases lined up too for the label 🙂 Plus, I’m working on my third Pretty Weird tour for Q4 of this year. I’m off to Australia and New Zealand next month for some shows and working on some other tours outside of Europe for 2020!
